It could be rather lonely on the red carpet in Venice this year: many US actors are boycotting film premieres and events, including Bradley Cooper.

According to a media report, film star Bradley Cooper (48) does not want to travel to Venice for the premiere of his new film because of the Hollywood strike. This was reported by the industry magazine “The Wrap”, citing a spokeswoman for the film festival. There, Cooper’s film “Maestro” is one of 23 entries competing for the Golden Lion grand prize. The biopic is a Netflix streaming service production and tells the story of the musician Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990). Cooper is the director and main actor. Also starring are Carey Mulligan, Maya Hawke and Sarah Silverman.

The Venice Film Festival runs from August 30th to September 9th. Many other stars who are members of the striking actors’ union SAG-AFTRA have been announced in the festival’s line-up. These include Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Adam Driver and Willem Dafoe. It is unclear who of these will come to Italy on the red carpet.

The members of SAG-AFTRA have been on strike since mid-July, and Hollywood screenwriters have been downing work since May. They demand better remuneration and rules for dealing with artificial intelligence. Because of the strike, the opening film “Challengers” by Luca Guadagnino with Hollywood star Zendaya, which was originally planned for Venice, cannot be shown at the festival. The theatrical release of the film was postponed. (dpa)
