Two women deprived of speech, one following a stroke, the other due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, were able to communicate after several years of silence thanks to technologies developed by two American teams.

Giving speech to people paralyzed because of an illness: this is the somewhat crazy project of two teams of American scientists, one ofstanford universitythe other of theuniversity of california San Francisco (UCSF). A little crazy, perhaps, but far from being unrealistic, as evidenced by their work, independent but published simultaneously in the prestigious journal Nature August 23. The two devices – combining brain electrodes with an algorithm – have enabled two women to communicate again, after more than a decade of silence: Ann, 47, paralyzed by a brain stem stroke 18 years old, and Pat, 67 years old, suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which causes a progressive loss of muscle control.
