DECRYPTION – A Franco-Swiss team enabled a paraplegic to control the movements of his legs by thought.

A decade later, the team of neuroscientists from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL) and the Vaudois University Hospital Center (CHUV) are multiplying the proofs of concept in humans. Nine patients were thus able to recover motor functions by means of electrical stimulation of their leg muscles.

But a gigantic new step has just been taken in association with researchers from the CEA, at the Clinatec laboratory in Grenoble. Until then, the stimulations allowing walking or standing were controlled by pre-recorded computer programs. In the review Nature researchers are now describing how a brain implant can decipher the patient’s walking intention…
