Brandenburg State Election Results: SPD Captures 30.9% Amid Record Voter Turnout

by time news

In Brandenburg, around 2.1 million eligible voters were able to cast their votes on Sunday. All electoral districts have now been counted. Here you will find all the information about the results of the state elections!

The ruling SPD, led by Minister President Dietmar Woidke, secured 30.9 percent, the most votes in the state elections in Brandenburg. This was announced by the state electoral authority in Potsdam after counting all the electoral districts. According to the results, the AfD came in second with 29.2 percent. Next was the alliance of Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) with 13.5 percent—ahead of the CDU with 12.1 percent.

The Greens, Left Party, FDP, and Free Voters will not be represented in the new state parliament because they failed to surpass the five percent threshold and did not win any direct mandates. Voter turnout was 72.9 percent, the highest ever recorded in state elections in Brandenburg. In the last elections of 2019, it was around 61 percent.

Before the election, Minister President Dietmar Woidke had announced that he would resign if the SPD did not receive more votes than the AfD. He said on Sunday evening that his party’s goal from the beginning had been to prevent Brandenburg from receiving a “brown stamp.”

We have made a comeback like never before in the history of our country.

Woidke: SPD has prevented extremists

Immediately after the release of the first forecast, SPD Secretary General Kevin Kühnert also commented on the SPD figures. “One thing can already be stated: Dietmar Woidke and his SPD in Brandenburg have managed a furious comeback in the past weeks.” He also described Woidke as an established minister president whom the people trust.

Looking ahead to the federal elections, Kühnert also stated that the state election in Brandenburg showed: “Intensive campaigning pays off.” However, the state election cannot be recorded as a success for the SPD at the federal level and especially for Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). This is because Minister President Woidke explicitly gave up on the support of the Chancellor during the campaign. Scholz expressed satisfaction after the SPD’s victory in Brandenburg. He said during his visit to New York: “I felt something was happening.”

Alice Weidel (AfD): “The East is blue.”

The second strongest force in Brandenburg is the AfD. The party’s national spokesperson, Alice Weidel, said regarding the recent elections in Thuringia and Saxony: “The East is blue. We are the strongest force in the East.” She expressed her “extreme satisfaction” with the result.

Weidel: We are extremely satisfied with the result

The AfD’s leading candidate in Brandenburg, Hans-Christoph Berndt, also found: “The future is blue—in the East and everywhere.” He referred to the many young voters, the “influx of youth.” Berndt is classified by the domestic intelligence agency as securely right-extremist; his party is considered a suspected right-wing extremist case.

Although the AfD is the second strongest force according to the preliminary final results, a participation in the government is not in sight. All promising parties had already excluded a coalition with the AfD during the campaign.

For the AfD, however, this is a goal: for the federal elections—not the next, “but maybe in 2029,” Weidel expressed a claim to participate in the government at the federal level.

Several young AfD supporters sang a song about deportation at an election party in the Potsdam district of Marquardt. To the tune of the song “Das geht ab (We party all night)” by the Atzen, they sang: “Hey, this goes off, we deport them all, they all go.” They held up a sign that read “Deport by the millions.”

Later, AfD supporters danced to a singer’s performance and his song: “East, East, East Germany.” The song states:

In the East, family means mother, father, child, the West doesn’t care because they’re so open. Here, one looks after things, here one takes care of oneself. In the West, Ali plays cat and mouse with the cops. In the East, one has cows and a chicken coop, in the West LGBTQ and a bang. East, East, East Germany.

It is now about government formation. This will likely be difficult for Minister President Woidke. The previous coalition of his SPD with the CDU and the Greens cannot be continued. The SPD and CDU alone do not have a majority. Aside from the AfD, only the BSW has made it into parliament.

It is definitely a test of mood for the next federal election in 2025. Rhineland-Palatinate’s Minister President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) has also commented on this. He told Spiegel that the result of the election in Brandenburg will also have an impact on the federal SPD, as the political temperature may now rise again for the SPD. “The federal election is completely open,” Schweitzer added. The Union does not have a winner subscription.
