Brandon Hyde Earns American League Manager of the Year Honors, Skip Schumaker Wins NL Award

Brandon Hyde and the Baltimore Orioles have had an incredible run over the past two seasons, going from worst to first in the American League. It all culminated in Hyde being named the American League Manager of the Year. The Orioles won 101 games in 2023, securing their first division title in nearly a decade.

Hyde received 27 first-place votes and three second-place votes out of 30 BBWAA votes. The only other manager to receive first-place votes was Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy. Despite the Rangers’ World Series run, Bochy was unable to surpass Hyde in the voting. This marks Hyde’s first Manager of the Year award.

This achievement is a stark contrast to Hyde’s early years with the Orioles, when the team struggled. In his first three years at the helm, the Orioles went 131-253. However, Hyde guided the team to their first winning season in 2022, setting the stage for their remarkable 2023 campaign.

Meanwhile, Skip Schumaker of the Miami Marlins won the NL Manager of the Year award in his first season with the team. Schumaker narrowly beat out NL finalists Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers and Brian Snitker of the Atlanta Braves. The Marlins thrived under Schumaker, going from a 69-93 record in 2022 to an 84-78 record in 2023. They also made their first full-season playoff berth since 2003.

Going into the 2024 season, the Orioles and Marlins both face challenges. The Orioles will aim to replicate their success, while the Marlins will have to navigate the loss of Sandy Alcantara to Tommy John surgery and a transition in leadership after the departure of general manager Kim Ng. Despite these obstacles, Hyde and Schumaker have proven themselves as adept managers, and their teams will look to build on their recent accomplishments in the coming season.
