Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Faces Uphill Battle for Re-election Amidst Plummeting Approval Ratings

New poll reveals significant challenges for Mayor Johnson’s second term bid, with only 26% approval citywide.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing a stark reality two years into his term, with a new poll indicating a significant uphill battle for re-election in 2027. The survey, conducted by the University of Chicago Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, shows the mayor’s approval rating at a mere 26%, a figure that political observers suggest signals serious trouble.

Deepening Disapproval Across the City

The poll paints a challenging picture for the mayor, with a substantial 58% of residents expressing disapproval of his job performance, while 16% offered no opinion. This widespread dissatisfaction spans all age and income demographics, and critically, all racial groups.

Even with affordable housing identified as a key focus, Johnson’s popularity has not translated into broader support. The findings suggest a disconnect between the mayor’s agenda and voter expectations.

Struggles Within Key Demographics

Mayor Johnson’s approval among Black voters, a crucial constituency, stands at 38% approve versus 42% disapprove. This indicates a challenging path forward in mobilizing core support for a potential second term.

Political analyst Laura Washington commented on the situation, stating, “I think he misjudged the voter when he thought that he could coast on the promises that he made, he could coast on his agenda. He has to deliver, and people are expecting that. And so far, the poll shows people are disappointed.”

Education Record Under Scrutiny

Democratic strategist Tom Bowen highlighted concerns regarding the mayor’s record, particularly with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). “He was a teacher, and they had an expectation that he would at least get education right,” Bowen said. “And two CEOs and almost two full school boards later, the problems are worse.”

Bowen further elaborated on the difficulties Mayor Johnson faces: “There’s a big difference between coming out of nowhere when very few people know you, versus making a comeback when everybody knows you and universally dislikes you.”

Mayor’s Office Responds to Crime Concerns

In response to the poll’s findings, the mayor’s office issued a statement focusing on public safety. “Mayor Johnson is focused on continuing the progress that has produced historic reductions in homicides, shootings, and robberies throughout the city,” the statement read. “Chicagoans care about making our city safer, and the Mayor’s record on public safety speaks for itself.”

However, analysts suggest that struggles with other campaign promises could impact fundraising and support. “If his image is diminishing, it’s going to be more difficult for him to raise money from his supporters,” Washington noted. “And his supporters are going to start looking at other potential challengers instead of him.”

With potential challengers already considering a run, this poll serves as a critical warning for Mayor Johnson. While polls offer a snapshot in time, the current data suggests a significant need for a shift in strategy to secure a second term.
