Wildlife specialists from the Animal Surveillance Brigade (BVA) of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City, diligently responded to the call of a citizen concerned about a Red-tailed Eagle that he found injured in the streets. of the Iztapalapa mayor’s office.

The incident took place near the BVA facilities in the Xochimilco mayor’s office, where a man handed over the injured bird, found at the intersection of Cerrada Norteña and Veracruz streets, in the San Miguel Teotongo neighborhood.

Motivated by the precarious state of the animal, the citizen protected it and transported it to the BVA to receive specialized care from wildlife experts.

After a visual evaluation, the specialists confirmed that it was a Red-tailed Hawk, approximately 50 centimeters in length, suggesting possible multiple trauma and the need to rule out head trauma.

This type of bird, also known as mountain hawks or red-tailed hawks, owes its name to the characteristic color of its tail, which varies from orange tones to intense reds.

Belonging to the Accipitridae family, they are birds of prey that can measure between 45 and 65 centimeters long and weigh up to one and a half kilos. They adapt to diverse habitats, from forests to urban areas.

After the initial examination, the eaglet was placed in the care of the BVA for treatment and rehabilitation. Once recovered, it will be released into its natural environment, in an effort to preserve the region’s biodiversity.
