Brazil exports 3.3 million bags in September; Cecafé warns of new impasses in global logistics

Brazil exported 3.294 million 60 kg bags of all types of coffee in September, which represents a drop of 5.3% compared to the 3.480 million bags recorded in the same month of 2022. In revenue, there was a decline of 23. 2% in the same comparative range, with the value falling to US$638 million. The data comes from the monthly statistical report of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).

With the performance, shipments in the first three months of the 2023/24 harvest year reached 9.993 million bags, generating foreign exchange revenue of US$ 1.998 billion. In comparison with the accumulated between July and the end of September last year, the performance represents an increase of 13.1% in volume, but a drop of 4.8% in the inflow of resources.

CIVIL YEAR
In the first nine months of 2023, Brazil reduced its coffee shipments by 9.1%, compared to January and September last year, to 26.225 million bags. Revenue follows a similar path, falling 17.9%, reaching US$5.547 billion.

According to the president of Cecafé, Márcio Ferreira, the drop in shipment volume is due to the performance of the Arabica variety, which was negative, reflecting the sharp decline in New York Stock Exchange prices, implying unattractive prices for national producers.

“In this scenario, coffee growers became more resistant to carrying out new business, just as, with narrower differentials, there is no attractiveness at the other end, with buyers not very active at the moment”, he explains.

He adds that some members also reported delays in boarding at ports. “Due to logistical problems, with changes of ships and postponements by some companies, there were delays in the processes, resulting in crowded ports and terminals prevented from receiving more cargo in some periods last month”, says Ferreira.

MAIN DESTINATIONS
In the first nine months of 2023, the United States remains the main destination for coffee from Brazil, having imported 4.359 million bags, or 25.7% less than what was recorded in the same period of 2022. This amount is equivalent to 16. 6% of total shipments in the recent range.

Germany, with a representation of 12%, purchased 3.146 million bags (-38.4%) and occupied second place in the ranking. Next comes Italy, with the purchase of 2.036 million bags (-15.2%); Japan, with 1.696 million bags (+24.1%); and Belgium, with 1.432 million bags (-37.7%).

Among the 10 main trading partners for Brazilian coffee until September 2023, China remains a positive highlight. The Asian giant imported 669.3 thousand bags in the period, increasing its acquisitions by 132.5% compared to the same period last year and occupying tenth place in the ranking of the largest destinations to date.

COFFEE TYPES
From January to the end of September 2023, Arabica coffee remains the most exported, with 20.803 million bags, which corresponds to 79.3% of the total. The soluble segment had the corresponding 2.803 million bags shipped in the interval, representing 10.7%, followed by the canephora variety (conilon + robusta), with 2.581 million bags (9.8%) and the roasted and roasted and ground, with 38,907 bags (0.1%).

Shipments of canephora coffees are the only ones with a positive performance this year, growing a substantial 111% compared to 2022. The president of Cecafé comments that this Brazilian variety remains more competitive in the global market and is in high demand due to production problems in important Robusta producing origins, especially Vietnam and Indonesia.

“It is not surprising, therefore, that the Vietnamese have increased their imports of green coffee from Brazil by a significant 537% in the year to September, nor that the Indonesians record an increase of 85.5% in purchases of our product in natura in the same period”, concludes Ferreira.

DIFFERENTIATED COFFEES
Coffees that have superior quality or certificates of sustainable practices accounted for 16.7% of total Brazilian exports of the product this year, with 4.382 million bags sent abroad. This volume represents a drop of 16.1% compared to that recorded between January and September 2022.

The average price of this product was US$237 per bag, generating foreign exchange revenue of US$1.038 billion in the first nine months of 2023, which corresponds to 18.7% of that obtained from total coffee shipments. In the annual comparison, the value is 29.5% lower than that measured in the same interval last year.

In the ranking of the main destinations for differentiated coffees until September, the USA occupies first place, with the acquisition of 998,053 bags, equivalent to 22.8% of the total of this type of product exported. Closing the top 5 are Germany, with 619,329 bags and a representation of 14.1%; Belgium, with 466,775 bags (10.7%); Netherlands (Netherlands), with 266,399 bags (6.1%); and the United Kingdom, with 222,707 bags (5.1%).

PORTS
The Santos maritime complex (SP) remains the main exporter of coffee from Brazil in 2023, with 19.176 million bags sent abroad, which corresponds to 73.1% of the total. Next come the ports of Rio de Janeiro, which account for 22.4% of shipments, having shipped 5.875 million bags, and Paranaguá (PR), with exports of 367,122 bags and representing 1.4%.
