Brazil‘s Supreme Court Lifts Ban on Social Media Platform X

Brazil’s Supreme Court has announced the lifting of a ban on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In a recent decision, Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized the “immediate return” of X’s activities in the country after it paid significant fines and suspended accounts accused of spreading misinformation.

According to a statement, the platform has settled fines totaling 28 million reais ($5.1 million; £3.8 million) and agreed to appoint a local representative, adhering to Brazilian law.

Moraes had previously blocked access to the platform, owned by Elon Musk, due to its refusal to ban several profiles identified by the government as spreading misinformation regarding the 2022 Brazilian Presidential election.

Anatel, Brazil’s telecommunications watchdog, has been tasked with ensuring that service is restored for more than 20 million users within 24 hours.

Following months of defiance against the court’s orders, Musk terminated the company’s Brazilian staff in late August and closed X’s office in Brazil. Musk, known for leading Tesla and SpaceX, described the decision to shut down X’s Brazilian operations as difficult.

Identifying himself as a “free-speech absolutist,” Musk criticized Justice Moraes’ decision to ban various accounts, labeling it as an abuse of power and a violation of free speech.

Several days later, Justice Moraes ordered a complete ban on the platform across the country, prompting many users to switch to alternative sites like Bluesky and resulting in a surge in demand for VPNs (Virtual Proxy Networks) in Brazil.

However, in September, the platform began to comply with the court’s orders, marking a notable shift in its approach.

On Tuesday, X expressed its satisfaction in returning to Brazil, stating, “Giving tens of millions of Brazilians access to our indispensable platform was paramount throughout this entire process,” according to its government affairs team.

It seems that X has now met all of the judge’s requirements for the ban to be lifted. Brazil represents one of the largest markets for the platform globally, and it is the largest market in Latin America, with approximately 22 million users.
