(ANSA) – BRASILIA, 06 SEPTEMBER – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has dismissed his Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship Silvio Almeida after allegations of sexual harassment raised by the Me Too Brazil movement. Almeida, 48, a lawyer and essayist, is leaving Lula’s third government after a year and eight months as minister. “Faced with the serious accusations against Minister Silvio Almeida and after having summoned him to a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Planalto, in the early evening of Friday 6, President Lula has decided to dismiss him from office,” reads a press release from the green-gold presidency of the Republic, which adds that “the president considers it untenable to keep the minister in office given the nature of the allegations of sexual harassment.” At least 14 women have reported Almeida, including the Minister of Racial Equality Anielle Franco, sister of activist and city councilor Marielle Franco, who was killed in Rio de Janeiro in 2018. The minister has so far denied all the accusations. (ANSA).
