São José dos Campos (SP): Convention formalizes Toninho Ferreira’s socialist candidate for the mayor’s office

The PSTU made official, on Saturday (20), the candidates for this year’s municipal elections in São José dos Campos (SP). Lawyer and council leader Toninho Ferreira is the candidate for mayor, and his deputy is also lawyer and activist of the women’s group Janaína dos Reis.

Toninho was twice president of the Metallurgical Workers Union of São José dos Campos. A historical leader in workers’ struggles, he was at the forefront of exemplary struggles in the city, such as the historical work of Pinheirinho and the mobilization against the illegal increase in the salaries of mayors and councilors. He has previously served twice for mayor of SJC and for governor of the State.

Janaína dos Reis (47 years old) is a lawyer, leader of the Women in Struggle (MML) and member of CSP-Conlutas in Vale do Paraíba. He has been the leader of a union of the branch of steel workers in São José dos Campos and the Region and has a prominent force in the fight against machismo, racism and LGBTphobia. In previous elections he was a candidate for council for the party.

A socialist alternative against the right and reformism

Held at the Benedito Alves Theater, it is the first conference in the city and is welcomed by clubs, social movements and political parties. Simone is a retired teacher and has a long history of fighting in the city. He was the director of Simpere (Regional Union of Education Professionals of the Metropolitan Region of Recife) for four terms. In addition to the majority formation with Simone and Mariano, the PSTU will launch two candidates for the council. They are Valéria Félix, a long-time health worker and activist, and Caio Marx, a history student and student union leader at UFPE.

Samuel called on workers and young people to join the campaign: “We are the only candidate that shows the choice of socialism for the city. We invite the working class and the youth to join this campaign. It will be on the basis of mobilization, in elections and in daily struggles that we will implement a plan to end once and for all the problems we have in our daily lives.”
