Around 17,000 people have died in Brazilian prisons in the last ten years, and at least some of these deaths could have been avoided, according to experts.

The number of deaths recorded from 2013 to June 2023 was obtained by Sheet after 75 LAI (Access to Information Law) requests to the states and together with Sisdepen, a data collection tool for the Brazilian prison system, linked to Senappen (National Secretariat of Penal Policies) of the Ministry of Justice.

Part of this data, corresponding to the years 2018 to 2022, was analyzed by Vital Strategies, a global organization made up of experts and researchers who collaborate with governments, according to which 95% of these deaths occurred from preventable causes.

The information analyzed shows that half of the deaths that occurred within Brazilian prisons from 2018 to 2022 were people under 38 years of age.

According to medical epidemiologist Fátima Marinho, the precariousness of official data and the significant number of deaths related to perforated ulcers are striking, something unusual in the Brazilian context because they are rare and treatable.
