The Paralympic Games Paris 2024 will take place from August 28 to September 8. Over the course of 12 days, more than 4,000 athletes from 184 countries will compete in 22 sports in the French capital. Brazil arrives strong for the competition with a delegation of 280 athletes, marking the largest female participation in the country’s history with 117 representatives. Check the complete list here.
After a strong start in swimming, Brazil kicked off Friday (30) of the games by excelling in athletics, where they won two medals, one gold and one bronze, in the 5000m – T1, with Júlio Agripino dos Santos, who broke the world record for the class, and Yeltsin Jacques, the former record holder. Meanwhile, the duo Joyce and Cátia Oliveira shone in table tennis, securing the bronze medal.
In the afternoon, Brazilian athletes continued their success in athletics. In the 100m – T37, Ricardo Mendonça crossed the finish line first, securing his first Paralympic gold medal of his career. Following closely, Petrúcio Ferreira confirmed his favoritism and won the championship for the third time in the 100m – T47 event. In the women’s club throw – F32, Giovanna Gonçalves initially finished in fourth place, but the Polish athlete Róża Kozakowska, who won the event, was disqualified for having an altered chair and using the equipment improperly. As a result, the Brazilian ended up with the bronze medal.
To cap off the day, the country won three more medals. In swimming, Talisson Glock earned the bronze in the 200m medley – SM6, the same color medal as the one won by the 4x50m freestyle relay. In taekwondo, Ana Carolina Moura won gold in the -65kg – K44 category in her first Paralympics, while Silvana Fernandes took bronze in the -57kg – K44 category.
In the last edition of the Paralympics, in Tokyo 2020, Brazil won 72 medals, a record number in the country’s history, consisting of 22 gold, 20 silver, and 30 bronze, finishing in seventh place in the medal table. Now, in Paris 2024, the nation aims to reach a total of 400 medals.
