While the UN climate summit COP28 debates the end of the use of fossil fuels, Lula’s government is considering accepting the invitation for Brazil to join OPEC+, which brings together members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allied producers.

“We look forward to joining this distinguished group and working with the 23 countries in the coming months and years,” said the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, on the first day of COP28, in Dubai (United Arab Emirates).

Experts criticize Brazil’s intention to join the cartel, highlighting the contradiction with Lula’s speech of positioning the country as an environmental power.

“Any global climate leadership must have a strong position on phasing out fossil fuels,” says Stela Herschmann of the Climate Observatory.

To curb global warming to 1.5°C, the International Energy Agency maintains that no new oil and gas projects should be carried out.
