Brazil surpassed the mark of three million dengue cases in just under three and a half months, in what was already the worst dengue epidemic in its history. To date, eleven states have declared a state of emergency, including the most populous states in Brazil (São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro).

According to data released this Thursday by the country’s Ministry of Health, there are 3,062,181 probable cases of dengue, with a historical incidence rate of 1,508 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.

In mid-March, Brazil surpassed the record number of cases registered in the entire year 2023 (1.65 million). In just over 20 days, the country recorded around one million cases. Even so, the infection rate began to fall and stabilize in the vast majority of states in the country.

The country registered 1,256 deaths, also a new annual high for the country that has almost half of the territory in emergency, in addition to 1,857 deaths under investigation.

Year could end with record 4.2 million cases

Deaths caused by mosquito-borne disease Temples of the Egyptians this year they almost tripled compared to the same period last year (388). The Ministry of Health admitted, in February, that Brazil could end this year with a record of 4.2 million cases, despite the fact that most Brazilian states have already surpassed the peak of the disease and are beginning to register a slowdown in cases.

The current epidemic is attributed to the effects of the El Niño meteorological phenomenon, which raised temperatures and increased rainfall across the country, factors that contribute to the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Brazil was the first country in the world to offer the dengue vaccine through the public health system, although the low number of doses available limited its application only to children and adolescents.
