Brazilian Diplomat Avoids Meeting Venezuelan Opposition Leader Amid Efforts to Maintain Neutrality

by time news

The special advisor to the President of the Republic for international affairs, Celso Amorim, avoided meeting with Maria Corina Machado, one of the main opposition leaders in Venezuela.

Corina Machado had indicated that she would like the meeting. However, Amorim preferred to decline. According to sources from Brazilian diplomacy, the decision was made to avoid what they called an “institutional trap.”

Brazil is trying to avoid taking any sides at this moment. So much so that the advisor to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) traveled to Venezuela making it clear that he would meet with representatives of both the ruling party and the opposition. However, he would avoid the actual candidates.

In this case, Corina Machado is not a candidate. But only because she was prevented from running by the judiciary. Nevertheless, she has become the main opponent of Nicolás Maduro and, consequently, the strongest voice in support of Edmundo González.

Since arriving in Venezuela, Amorim has met with the Chancellor of Venezuela from Nicolás Maduro’s government, Yván Gil, and opposition leader Gerardo Blyde. The agendas were strategic and demonstrate Brazil’s effort to show balance.

The opposition figure Blyde was carefully chosen because he was the negotiator of the Barbados Agreement and already has a long-standing relationship of dialogue and trust with the Brazilian president’s circle.

The former chancellor of Lula also met with Jorge Rodríguez, president of the Legislative Assembly and head of Maduro’s electoral campaign. Considered one of the strongest names in Chavismo, Rodríguez is now the main point of dialogue for the Venezuelan government with the international community.

According to information obtained by CNN, the meetings served for Amorim to personally reinforce what the Brazilian government defends: regardless of the side, whoever loses must accept defeat and recognize the opponent’s victory.
