On social media, Nathalie’s team revealed that she fell ill, was hospitalized in an emergency situation, and was only discharged this week, before her match against 16-year-old Canadian Ruien Xiao. The Brazilian has been suffering from chronic pain at the tumor site.

Nathalie, 38, lost in her competition debut with a score of 15 to 11, leading to her elimination from the Paris Olympic Games. She even fell ill during the third period and was attended to by the medical team of the competition.

Nathalie was discharged from the hospital this week and was cleared to compete at the Paris Olympics. The athlete revealed that she will undergo surgery next week, scheduled for July 31st.

After her elimination, the profile of the International Olympic Committee showed support for the Brazilian fencing athlete. “You are a giant of Brazilian sports,” they posted.
