The Brazilian women’s football team went from heaven to hell this Sunday, at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Until the 45th minute of the second half, Brazil was winning against Japan 1-0 and, thus, secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament with a round to spare. However, the canarinho team conceded two goals in seven minutes, already in stoppage time, and was defeated. Now, the chances of qualification are complex.
To advance without relying on other results, Brazil will have to defeat Spain next Wednesday at 12 PM (Brasília time). The current World Cup champions, the Spanish team is the biggest force in women’s football today and features Aitana Bonmatí, the current best player in the world.
In their debut, Spain came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in a match where they had overwhelming superiority.
If they do not defeat the Spaniards, Brazil, currently with three points, a goal difference of zero, and in third place in Group C, will need to rely on some favorable results that will depend, of course, on the scores of this second round, which still has matches to be played.
Divided into three groups of four teams, the women’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics will see eight teams qualify. Thus, the two teams with the most points in each group will advance, along with the two best third-placed teams.
