Brazilians protest against President Jair Bolsonaro

by time news

On October 2, demonstrations were held throughout Brazil against President Jair Bolsonaro. Protesters demanded the resignation of the head of state and expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s actions in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, poverty and high inflation.

The demonstrations were held in 305 cities in Brazil and 18 countries around the world. The organizers claim that one hundred thousand people took to the streets of Brazilian cities on Saturday. The largest events have traditionally taken place in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Protesters criticized the government for its policies to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, demanding more vaccines, and failing to curb inflation, which has hit the poorest of the population hard. In the city of Natal in the north-east of the country, for example, protesters carried out a refrigerator filled with gnawed bones, with the inscription “Hunger does not wait.” True, in today’s Brazil this is not an allegory at all.

From time to time, news from different cities gets on the pages of local newspapers about how shops distribute bones, fat and veins left after cutting beef and pork carcasses to those in need. This happens not only in poor regions, but also in metropolitan areas such as Rio de Janeiro.

The demonstrations were peaceful. Nevertheless, an incident took place in the city of Recife in the northeast of the country. The car drove behind the barriers, one of the protesters got under the wheels. Witnesses say that the driver did this for a reason. Approaching the place of the gathering of protesters, instead of slowing down, on the contrary, he increased his speed, and then fled from the scene without providing the injured first aid.

The presidential elections in Brazil will be held only in a year, but already now the political situation in the country is very tense. We can safely say that the main confrontation for the post of head of state will unfold between the current President Jair Bolsonaro and ex-leader Lula da Silva. This is confirmed by all recent opinion polls.
