Brazilians in Gaza

Brazil’s ambassador to Egypt, Paulino Franco de Carvalho Neto, did not confirm that Brazilians trapped in the Gaza Strip will leave the enclave this Sunday. Asked by the newspaper O GLOBO, he said that the group “will know in the morning” whether it will be able to leave Palestinian territory.

“We will know from early today (Sunday) how everything will go. We are in line,” he told GLOBO. “We are ready to act.”

In total, 24 Brazilians, 7 Palestinians residing in the country and 3 relatives are awaiting clearance from Israel to leave the war zone.

Closed since Friday (10), the Rafah crossing, on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, is expected to be reopened this Sunday (12), local authorities told Reuters.

The Rafah post is the only exit authorized by Israel for those wishing to leave Gaza.

To date, seven lists have been published with foreigners allowed to leave the war zone, but none of them included Brazilians. The last one, however, included the group of 34 people, however, the escalation of the conflict and the bombing of hospitals caused the passage to be closed.

Ambassador Alessandro Candeas, head of the Brazilian Representation Office in Ramallah, previously stated this Saturday that the entry of the group of 34 people into Egypt still depended on the passage of ambulances with injured people from Gaza.

After the crossing did not take place on Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, stated that it was not possible to say for sure whether the Brazilians would leave the Gaza Strip.

“The crossing is complex because it is open for a few hours a day. There is an understanding that first ambulances with injured people pass through and only after that do nationals from other countries pass through. That’s what happened today (Friday), yesterday and Wednesday. There was no crossing Gaza to Egypt due to the impossibility of the ambulances passing”, explained the minister, adding: “The situation in Gaza does not allow us to say whether today, tomorrow or when. It is a region in conflict, and there are countless issues that make it difficult to open .”
