In the next few hours, X may close in Brazil. On Thursday, the deadline that Brazil’s Supreme Court Minister, Alexandre de Moraes, established for Elon Musk’s network to appoint a legal representative for Brazil has expired.

X responded to this question with a statement in which he accused the Brazilian government of censorship. “Just because we don’t comply with illegal orders for them to spy on political opponents.”

Moraes requested the closure of several X profiles of a governmental nature after the events of January 8, 2023 in Brasilia, in which the mob tried to attack the institutions. The Supreme Court set a daily fine of 100,000 reais (about 16,000 euros) per profile. The social network refused to shut it down, arguing that it was against freedom of expression. The fines today exceed 20 million reais (3.2 million euros). As collateral, Moraes on Thursday took over the bank account of Starlink in Brazil, the satellite internet company also owned by Elon Musk.

The closure of Most of the government’s decisions are aimed at removing illegal or false content from the right-wing and conspiracy groups, an ideological group with the magnate that is increasingly compatible with.

The conflict with Brazil is one of the most explosive that the social network faces. On August 17, X closed its office in Brazil, which has placed it in legal limbo. At the beginning of the month, Alexandre de Moraes ordered the jailing of Rachel Conceição, X’s legal representative in Brazil, “for disobeying the judicial decision to stop the gossip with anti-government content.”

In the past few hours, President Lula da Silva has given his support to Moraes’ decisions and has shown that Elon Musk must comply with Brazilian law.
