The Brazilian Vitor Ishiy defeated the Australian Nicholas Lum by 4 sets to 0 (scores of 11-7, 11-5, 11-7, and 11-6) this Monday (29), at the Paris Sud Arena, advancing to the second round of table tennis in the Paris Olympics. He will face German Dimitrij Ovtcharov, silver medalist at the Tokyo Games.

Ishiy’s opponent in the men’s singles debut was the favorite for the match, as Lum is ranked 38th in the world, while Ishiy is 85th. Nevertheless, the Brazilian dominated the Australian and qualified for the next stage without difficulties.

“I think I was able to impose my game quite a bit. He had trouble receiving my serve. This gave me confidence the entire match, even in moments when I had difficulties receiving. This debut in the Olympic singles was incredible. I had the support of the Brazilians and also the French, because I am playing here in France. In doubles, we didn’t manage to win, but every positive result here is a title,” said the table tennis player after the victory.

Vitor Ishiy had already competed in the mixed doubles of table tennis at these Olympics. Together with Bruna Takahashi, the Paulista was defeated in the debut of the category, losing 4 to 2 to the Spanish duo Álvaro Robles and Maria Xiao last Saturday (27).
