“Bread instead of firecrackers”: Church aid organization calls for donations

Berlin (epd). The Protestant aid organization “Bread for the World” is calling for donations at the turn of the year under the motto “Bread instead of firecrackers”. “We invite you to forgo the fireworks this year and work with us to set records in the fight against hunger,” said the president of the aid organization, Dagmar Pruin, on Wednesday in Berlin. The fundraiser to fight hunger has existed since 1981.

Even an amount of 50 euros helps, said Pruin. This could be used to train a farmer in Malawi, Africa, to create mixed crops and use rainwater more effectively. “Almost one in 10 people in the world are hungry,” Pruin said. “We can do something concrete about this together.”

After two New Year’s Eves with a corona-related ban, people in Germany were allowed to fire again at the turn of the year. According to “Brot für die Welt”, record sales were achieved with the sale of fireworks items in 2022.
