Breakfast is not immune to inflation

by time news

Lhe most basic breakfast items have never cost so much. According to the latest figures from INSEE, published Thursday, the rise in production costs, linked to soaring energy prices, as well as the increase in transport costs, have had a strong impact on the first meal of the day. Between August 2021 and August 2022, some prices exploded, reports BFMTV. Butter experienced the highest increase of all these products. It now costs 15.8% more.

Other breakfast products are also strongly impacted, such as eggs, which saw their price increase by 11.4%, but also yogurts (+9.7%), cereals (+9.5%), sugar (+9.1%), bread (+8.2%), jams, honey and compotes (7.8%) and finally fresh fruit (+3.2%). These strong increases also concern morning drinks, in particular coffee, which increased by 11.2%. Skimmed or semi-skimmed milk (+9.4%), whole milk (+7.8%), chocolate powder (+6.7%), fruit juices (+6%) and teas and infusions (3.1%) were also hit hard by inflation.

In addition to production and transport costs, some of these increases are explained by the cost of raw materials. Coffee, for example, has become more expensive this year due to a poor harvest. Violent episodes of frost and flooding in Brazil, the world’s largest producer, forced the country to destroy part of its coffee, which considerably reduced the supply on the market. Electronic products are also victims of inflation: the price of refrigerators has increased by 11% and that of coffee machines by 2%, according to figures from UFC-Que Choisir.
