Background
Petrol and diesel are being sold unchanged in Chennai for the 295th consecutive day.
The world is running on fuel. But the countries of the world have not raised themselves to the level of working on complete electric power. India has also gone all out in this effort. Whereas India is importing petrol and diesel related products from foreign countries. Thus it can be expected to move towards a completely electrified country very soon.
As 80% of the vehicles in India are running on petrol and diesel, the increase in the price of petrol and diesel is causing a great change in the daily life of people. So, people monitor the price situation every day as the rise in fuel prices is reflected in the rise in prices of daily essentials to a large extent.
Constantly changing fuel prices
Petrol price in Chennai today (March 12) is Rs 102.63 per liter and diesel price is Rs 94.24 per litre. This is the 295th day in a row without a price change. Earlier in 2020 and 2021, the public suffered a huge economic impact due to the lockdown imposed due to the spread of the corona virus.
Considering this, on November 4, 2021, the central government has increased the price of petrol per liter to Rs. 5, diesel price was reduced by Rs.10 and sold. Petrol was sold at Rs 101.40 per liter and diesel at Rs 91.43 per liter in Tamil Nadu on that day. After that 5 months later on May 22 last year there was a change in petrol and diesel prices. At that time, due to the reduction in excise duty, the price of a liter of petrol fell by 8 rupees and the price of diesel by 6 rupees.
In such an environment, almost 9 months have passed without any change in petrol and diesel prices, which has caused happiness among the people.
Ethanol Blended Gasoline
The National Biofuel Policy announced by the Central Government in 2018 set a target of 20 percent ethanol in petrol by 2030. However, that target has now been revised five years earlier to 2025.
Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, “Twenty percent ethanol blended petrol will be available in the country from December or January.” Speaking to the media, he said, “We are constantly looking at ethanol production. I believe 20 percent of the blended fuel will hit the market in December or January before April 2023.”
Citing the example of Brazil, where flex-fuel vehicles (mixed fuel vehicles) are available, Hardeep Singh Puri said, “Consumers can choose either ethanol or petrol. This will be the ultimate goal of the government.
However, to achieve that level, there are some technical aspects. For that, work is going on. We are going to have a major meeting with automobile manufacturers on ethanol adulteration. India has advanced the target date of achieving 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025 by five years.
For blending 20 percent ethanol in petrol, our country needs 1,000 crore liter capacity. 450 crore liters are being produced. A tender has been floated for 400 crore litres. Sufficient ethanol is available for a 20 percent dilution. By 2025, a target of 20 per cent ethanol has been set in all petrol sold in the country,” he said.
