BREAKTHROUGH RESEARCH: TAILOR-MADE TREATMENT FOR KIDNEY PATIENTS

A groundbreaking research project, led by Professor Hiddo Lambers Heerspink of UMC Groningen, hopes to revolutionize the treatment of chronic kidney damage. The research, which has received a substantial subsidy of 9.5 million euros from the European Union, aims to develop personalized care for kidney patients.

The innovative research, conducted in several countries simultaneously, is being carried out by a consortium called PRIME-CKD, which includes researchers, doctors, pharmaceutical companies, industrial parties, and the Kidney Foundation. The project seeks to understand why individuals respond differently to the same medications and to identify specific biomarkers in the blood and urine of kidney patients which can indicate kidney damage or the effectiveness of medications.

The ultimate goal of the research is to provide tailor-made treatment for every kidney patient, based on an individual profile of the disease course and the most effective medications for that specific patient. Dr. Martin de Borst, a nephrologist at UMC Groningen, expressed his hopes that the research will lead to the dream outcome of personalized care, based on measured blood values. He emphasized the importance of giving people the right treatment to prevent the gradual deterioration of kidney function and the need for dialysis or transplantation.

According to Lambers Heerspink, if the research is successful, the results will be implemented in clinical practice within the next five years, offering individual and optimal treatment for every kidney patient.

The Kidney Foundation’s involvement in the project is significant, as it marks the first time that the foundation has participated in a research consortium in this manner. Stijn Gbraken, the Innovation and Valorization Program Manager at the Kidney Foundation, explained that the foundation is part of the PRIME-CKD consortium and is responsible for setting up and maintaining a network of stakeholders, as well as communicating the research results to a broader audience.

The participation of the Kidney Foundation ensures that the patient’s voice is heard in the research and that the results can be effectively implemented into clinical practice to have a major impact on the treatment of people with kidney damage.

The research has the potential to transform the treatment of kidney patients by providing personalized care, tailored to each individual’s specific needs and condition. With the support of the PRIME-CKD consortium and the Kidney Foundation, the project aims to realize the dream of personalized medicine for kidney patients in the near future.]
