The cells that cause metastatic breast cancer act with nocturnality and treachery. The second was already known, but the first has just been revealed, almost casually, by a team of Swiss researchers whose work is published in “Nature”.

Specifically, this team of scientists has discovered that breast cancer cells take advantage of the fact that the affected person rests to escape into the bloodstream and thus spread throughout the body, causing the dreaded metastasis.

“When the affected person is asleep, the tumor wakes up,” summarizes study leader Nicola Aceto, an oncologist at ETH Zurich.

During the study, conducted in 30 cancer patients and mouse models, the researchers discovered that the tumor generates more circulating cells, those that break away from a tumor and spread throughout the body, when the body is asleep.
