Breast reconstruction with your own fat cells is included in basic insurance

After an amputation, there is the possibility in the Netherlands to have a repair operation performed

Breast reconstruction with your own fat cells will be included in the basic insurance as of 1 January 2023. This was announced by the National Health Care Institute on Monday 19 December. Strict conditions still apply to the procedure being reimbursed: reimbursement is only possible for the treatment of women with a total breast removal after breast cancer or as a precaution because of a genetic risk of breast cancer.

New option after mastectomy
After an amputation, there is the possibility in the Netherlands to have a repair operation performed. A new breast could already be made by using (silicone) implants or a large transplant of fat and skin from the abdomen, buttock or legs. There is also the choice not to undergo breast reconstruction. From 1 January 2023, a method will be added to this: a breast reconstruction with your own fat cells.

Women must therefore have sufficient fat tissue and be prepared to undergo several operations to create this breast. The Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery (NVPC) is pleased with this good news for women. Chairman Bert van Drunen: “Thanks to large-scale research since 2015, women are given an extra choice after mastectomy”.

Large-scale research since 2015
Since October 2015, a large scientific study has been carried out in a small group of hospitals: the BREAST trial. This research has led the National Health Care Institute to conclude that breast reconstruction with your own fat tissue after total breast removal is an effective treatment for these women. This treatment is also called lipofilling or AFT (Autologous Fat Transfer).

Offer of treatment in steps throughout the Netherlands
The treatment is not offered everywhere in the Netherlands at the same time. The reason for this is that plastic surgeons have to gain experience before this application of AFT can be offered. In 2023, the hospitals that participated in the scientific research will be gradually expanded, with distribution across the Netherlands as the first condition. A list of hospitals offering AFT after total breast removal will be published on the NVPC website after completion of the training.

Information
Information material is being developed in collaboration with patient associations about the pros and cons of the procedure. This information will also be available on the NVPC website in due course.
