The Government of President Nayib Bukele is making progress in implementing policies and the legal framework to promote and protect breastfeeding in the country, thanks to the efforts led by the Office of First Lady Gabriela de Bukele.

As part of this initiative, the activities that have been carried out throughout August, which marks Breastfeeding Week (the first week of the month), have included training for staff of the National Integrated Health System and communities on different areas of knowledge in this field.

“The fact that we are now in this situation has been the effort of constant training, so much so that we already have 285 breastfeeding consultants and 1,000 counselors who are trained and certified,” explained the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabi.

“The leadership of First Lady Gabriela de Bukele provides the impetus we need to carry out these actions around breastfeeding,” said Elisa Gamero, Head of Health and Nutrition Projects at the Office of the First Lady.

Minister Francisco Alabi also highlighted that, as a result of all the policies and the legal framework implemented by President Bukele’s Government, such as the Nacer con Cariño Law, they have contributed to saving lives: maternal mortality decreased, since 2021, from 62.8% to 26.8%; while, prematurity in births dropped from 8.6% to 7.8%, the official stressed. Likewise, infant mortality dropped from 4.34% to 3.9%.
