BOLZANO. While excavations for the Brenner Tunnel continue, there is a setback for the access route to Bavaria. In fact, the CDU and CSU reject the 54 kilometer route proposed by Deutsche Bahn between Munich and Kufstein and demand a reworking of the project with more tunnels and the undercrossing of the Inn river.

This would not only increase costs but also it would lengthen the implementation time. The tunnel is expected to come into operation in 2032, but the access route in Germany only after 2050if Berlin does not give the green light by 2025, writes the Tiroler Tageszeitung.

In the meantime rail freight traffic on the Brenner has fallen below 27%writes the newspaper. One reason, according to Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler, is that the cost of energy for trains has been more pronounced than the cost of diesel for trucks.

The objective of 40% of rail freight set by Vienna for 2040 therefore seems distant.
