STEINACH. Construction work on the Brenner Base Tunnel BBT continues unabated. Today, near Steinach at the Brenner Passthe launching ceremony of the two cutters “Wilma” and “Olga” for the construction lot “H53 Pfons-Brennero”. The Bbt Se company had organized an ideas competition to suggest the names of the two Tbm cutters. Helga Morandell from Kaltern has thus named the Tbm “Wilma” and has been authorized to start it together with the CEO of Bbt Se, Gilberto Cardola. Also present on site were the President of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Arno Kompatscher, Daniel Alfreider (Provincial Councilor for Mobility), Paloma Aba Garrote (Director of the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment CINEA), Philippe Chantraine (EU Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport DG MOVE), Judith Engel (Director of ÖBB Infrastruktur AG), Daniela Lezzi (Director of the Brenner Rail Tunnel TFB), Anton Mattle (President of the State of Tyrol), and the two members of the Board of Directors of Bbt Se Martin Gradnitzer and Gilberto Cardola.

Kompatscher praised the work of the project company Bbt Se: “Thanks to the efficiency and dedication of the numerous employees, work is now underway on one of the last open construction lots on the axis between Innsbruck and Fortezza. Bbt Se is a symbol of cross-border cooperation. The implementation of this project is only possible thanks to the joint approach to the north and south of the Brenner Pass”, declared the provincial president. The Brenner Base Tunnel is also essential for the management of cross-border traffic along the entire Brenner corridor.

The councilor Alfreider stressed: “Europe needs more railways, but at the same time theand railways need more Europe. There are few places in the EU where this is as clear as at the Brenner Pass. The Brenner Base Tunnel is a milestone for mobility and networking in Europe. The BBT will reduce the distance between South Tyrol and Central Europe, thus making an important contribution to more sustainable passenger and freight transport.”
