TRENTO. As reported by theSouth Tyrol Health Authoritythe nine hikers treated last night by the emergency room of the hospital in Bressanone were hit by norovirus, Among the symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting: “The clinical situation of the affected subjects was not worrying; all patients have been discharged and are recovering”, the South Tyrol Health Authority reports in a note.

Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the cause of the illnesses, which revealed that the nine people had contracted a norovirus infection. The Health Authority announced that it reacted immediately, adopting “all necessary measures to limit the further spread of the virus”.

“All those affected were informed and asked to pay more attention to hand hygiene and preventive measures. Information material was also made available. The accommodation facilities where the tourist group had stayed overnight or stopped were also asked to adopt preventive hygiene measures. The Public Hygiene Service is continuously monitoring the situation”, continues the note from the South Tyrol Health Authority.

“Norovirus – the Health Authority reminds us – is transmitted mainly from person to person. Infections and epidemics can also occur through contaminated food, drinks or contaminated surfaces (such as door handles). In general, the infection is not dangerous for healthy people and symptoms usually subside within a few days. By observing correct hygiene measures, the risk of infection can be limited. Thorough hand washing after using the toilet or after contact with potentially contaminated objects is essential: for example, diapers and personal towels, just as cleaning and disinfecting the toilets reduces the risk of contagion for the environment”.
