BRESSANONE. The nonni vigilantes have returned to their posts along the streets and at dangerous intersections in Bressanone, having resumed service on Thursday with the start of the 2024-2025 school year. At the request of the Municipality and the schools of Bressanone, the service has been strengthened by adding a fifteenth operational element and a so-called “joker”, available in case of need, to the 14 nonni vigilantes present last school year.
As established by the Municipality, the grandparents vigilantes must have reached the age of 52 and not exceeded 75 years of age on the date of starting the activity. Those interested, who must be in good health, had to submit their application to the general secretary of personnel and, having taken up the role, they committed to accompanying the students along the home-school routes at the beginning and end of lessons until next June 2025.
“Thanks go to the grandparents who have left their uniform and role to new colleagues who have started their new adventure this year – said the competent councilor Thomas Schraffl – Thanks to the presence of new traffic wardens, we will continue to ensure safe home-school routes for students and also to control and fine unauthorized passages of cars and trucks in school campus areas. The support of these people is essential for the local police and represents a real added value for our entire community”. In turn, the commander of the local police force Jessica Ruffinatto underlined how “the figure of the traffic warden is a point of reference for schoolchildren and students and a precious help also for the elderly, cyclists and pedestrians who cross the streets at busy points and times. Their daily presence and close relationship with the community creates a special bond, making the traffic wardens figures loved and appreciated by adults and children alike”. In recent days, the Municipality of Bressanone organized a meeting to enhance the commitment of the traffic wardens and also to gather ideas and suggestions to further improve the service.
“It is important to give continuity to the service” concluded Councilor Schraffl, recalling that the Municipality of Bressanone is always looking for nonni vigilantes and renews the invitation to all interested parties to become part of this valuable auxiliary special force of the Local Police by submitting an application for the 2025/26 school year to the Personnel Office of the Municipality of Bressanone in via Portici Maggiori 5.
