Brest: fire attempts at the sub-prefecture, second public building affected in two days

by time news

The situation is extremely tense in Brittany, more particularly in Brest. Two fire attempts, one Saturday evening, the other Sunday morning, targeted the sub-prefecture of Brest without causing any casualties or damage, announced this Sunday the public prosecutor, Camille Miansoni.

Saturday evening, following a call shortly before 10 p.m. from a local resident reporting “the presence of a ball of fire in front of the entrance to the sub-prefecture of Brest”, “the police noted the presence of an artisanal incendiary device in the process of being consumed in a hedge located to the right of the entrance gate, “said the magistrate in a press release.

“Facing the gate”, the firefighters “noted scattered on the ground a plastic packaging, two aerosol cans, a can of soda and 50 pop rivets”. On Sunday morning, another attempt took place. After being alerted at 9:40 a.m. by the Codis, “the police officers dispatched to the scene discovered in front of the entrance to the foreigners’ service a homemade incendiary device with a glass bottle in the process of burning”, continues the press release.

Already a public building destroyed by fire on Friday

“These facts did not cause any material damage or physical injury,” said the prosecutor. The investigation was entrusted to the local service of the judicial police of Brest and Quimper. A fire reminiscent of the one that destroyed part of the building of the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) in Brest on Friday morning, targets the day before numerous rocket fires and distress fires from angry fishermen, a-t -we learned from the prefecture of Finistère.

The fire started in the attic of the building shortly after 6 a.m. “The structure of the roof having been completely destroyed, it collapsed and the second floor was also completely damaged by the fire,” fire captain Raphaël Le Bras, commander of the rescue operations, told AFP. .

Thursday, as part of a national demonstration, Breton fishermen had launched dozens of fires and distress flares towards the building of the OFB, in front of which a huge blaze had also been lit. Embers or ashes were able to smolder and, fanned by the violent wind which blew all night, caused the fire to start in the attic. “It is the most probable hypothesis but it remains a hypothesis”, declared the sub-prefect of Brest Jean-Philippe Setbon. An investigation was opened by the Brest prosecutor’s office and entrusted to the judicial police, the public prosecutor, Camille Miansoni, told AFP.

The manager of the Brest site of the OFB, Michel Peltier, said he was “very worried about the integrity of the building” on Thursday when the fishermen fired rockets at the offices of the OFB, then to have finally been reassured by learning that only one window had been broken. The Finistère fisheries committee, which had called for a “peaceful march”, expressed its “dismay” at the images of the fire. “Our first reaction is to strongly condemn acts of violence and destruction whoever the perpetrators of these acts. Nothing should and can justify this! “, writes the organization in a press release received by AFP.
