A new single-arch pedestrian bridge, a true replica of the historic Korakou Bridge that was blown up and destroyed during the civil war, is to be built under a program contract of the Ministry of Culture with the Region of Epirus.
The restoration of the old bridge, as mentioned by the regional governor Alexandros Kahrimanis during the meeting of the Regional Committee, is unfeasible for financial and technical reasons, as there is no “registered monument”, as mentioned by the deputy regional governor Vassilis Psathas, with the ministry proposing the construction of a new one , in the form of the old one, nearby.
For this reason, the Region of Epirus will carry out a topographic survey of the area, while, as part of the program contract, a study will be carried out by specialist scientists for the construction of the single-arch pedestrian bridge, the restoration of the old Customs House (Koulias) and the construction of access to site of the old Korakos bridge.
With the need to restore the bridge, due to its historical importance, the leaders of the factions “Kiono ton Epirotes” Yiannis Stefos and “Epiros Olon” Stefanos Zoumbas agreed on behalf of the opposition, with the former noting that all the possibilities for restoration to the original form of the bridge and the second to emphasize the way the project will be done. Responding to Mr. Zoumba, the regional governor noted that it will not be done with the construction study method.
Earlier, the Commission approved the conclusion of a program contract and its terms between the Region of Epirus, the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Zagori for the implementation of the project “Implementation of the management plan of the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape of Zagori”.
