In a statement released on Friday, the United Kingdom reinstated its stance on the significance of respect for sovereignty and the rule of law following reports alleging that India had requested Canada to recall 41 diplomats. This development comes as tensions between India and Canada have escalated in recent weeks.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had a phone conversation with his Canadian counterpart, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during which they discussed the need for all nations to adhere to international principles. A government spokesperson stated, “The Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s position that all countries should respect sovereignty and the rule of law, including the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”
The situation between India and Canada became strained when the Canadian government announced its active pursuit of credible allegations connecting Indian government agents to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia in June.
Given the gravity of the situation, both the United Kingdom and Canada emphasized the importance of upholding the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which outlines the rights and privileges of diplomatic missions worldwide. The convention is vital for maintaining diplomatic ties and facilitating peaceful relations between nations.
