Bristol is transforming into the UK’s first wetland city through 200 projects aimed at combating flooding, heat, and climate change, with millions in Aviva funding over five years, according to a collaborative effort involving the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) and local groups.
Bristol’s ambitious plan to become the UK’s first wetland city involves creating 200 new wetland projects, from floating gardens in the harbour to restored canals and parks, to manage water more effectively and combat climate impacts. The initiative, backed by millions in Aviva funding over five years, seeks to address extreme weather events like the recent severe drought and flooding by rethinking urban water management.
Bristol’s Wetland City Initiative
The project, led by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) in partnership with Aviva and the local council, aims to integrate water into the city’s infrastructure through floating wetlands, restored wetlands, and community-led projects. Peter Lee, the program lead for the wetland project, emphasized that cities are typically designed to drain water, but Bristol’s approach reverses this by retaining water to prevent overheating during droughts and managing overflow during heavy rains. When you get extremes like the long dry summer we just had, the water is being taken out of the city and we see overheating rapidly,
Lee said, highlighting the need for a systemic shift.

The WWT’s vision includes 200 projects across the city, such as floating docks covered in vegetation that act as wetlands, canals with improved water retention, and parks designed to absorb excess rain. These efforts are part of a broader goal to make Bristol a “wetter” city, leveraging water for biodiversity, climate adaptation, and community well-being. said Leticia Carvalho, Principal Coordinator for Marine and Freshwater at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), underscoring the global significance of wetland conservation.
Global Wetland City Examples
Bristol’s initiative draws inspiration from existing wetland cities like Saint-Omer in France and Changde in China, which have seen measurable benefits from prioritizing wetlands. Saint-Omer, recognized as a wetland city since 2018, has reduced flooding, improved water quality, and boosted biodiversity. In Changde, wetland restoration has led to significant ecological and economic gains, including enhanced food production. These examples demonstrate that urban wetlands can mitigate climate risks while supporting ecosystems and communities.

Carvalho said, reinforcing the value of such projects. Bristol’s approach aligns with these principles, aiming to create a model for other cities facing similar climate challenges.

Creating a wetland city requires overcoming practical and cultural hurdles. Wetlands are often perceived as undesirable or unappealing, yet Bristol’s project seeks to reframe them as assets. The WWT’s floating wetlands, for instance, are designed to be visually appealing and functional, blending urban development with ecological resilience.

Local groups, schools, and residents are encouraged to participate in wetland creation and maintenance, fostering a sense of ownership and connection to the environment.
