Violent protests erupted in cities and towns across Britain, with claims that the attacker was an immigrant being promoted to mobilise anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant protests.

CNN reported that Britain is facing the worst social unrest in years.

According to the network, “rioters set fire to and stormed hotels designated for housing asylum seekers in northern England, and demonstrators vandalized two hotels belonging to the “Holiday Inn” chain in northern England, one in the city of Tamworth and the other in Rotherham, which resulted in the injury of a police officer.”

The police confirmed that the suspect was born in Britain and that they do not view the attack as terrorist.

UK Police Minister Diana Johnson said there would be a “catch them fast” approach to far-right rioters causing unrest, adding that there was “no need to bring in the army”.

In statements to the BBC, Diana Johnson confirmed, “The plan is to carry out arrests and bring swift charges in order to get the rioters off the street as quickly as possible and act as a deterrent to prevent further unrest.”

The protests erupted after three girls were killed in a knife attack at a children’s dance in Southport, northwest England, last week. The violent unrest is the worst since the country’s riots in 2011, and poses a major challenge to the Labour government led by Keir Starmer just weeks after it took power.

The British Home Office announced that “greater protection with new emergency security will be provided to mosques in the United Kingdom in light of the recent attacks.”
