Britain has removed Pakistan from the list of ‘high risk third world countries’
London: The British government has removed Pakistan from the list of ‘high risk third world countries’. Besides Pakistan, the UK has also removed Nicaragua from the list of ‘at risk’ countries.
There are currently 26 countries on the list, including Iran, Myanmar and Syria.
The amendments to the list were tabled in the British Parliament on Monday.
“In the new list, Nicaragua and Pakistan are not classified as high-risk third world countries,” said the British government’s official legislative document of November 14.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Zardari Bhutto has also shared the fact that Pakistan’s name has been removed from the list through his Twitter handle.
The UK included Pakistan in the said list in April 2021.
Earlier, Pakistan’s name was removed from the global watchdog’s ‘grey list’, which monitors issues such as financing terrorism and money laundering.
Pakistan has been removed from the gray list of Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The move came after four years of listing.
The decision was taken at the FATF meeting held in Paris. FATF has 39 members including India, America and Britain. This will include the GCC and the European Commission.
FATF responded that Pakistan has strengthened its anti-money laundering operations while addressing technical deficiencies and is fighting the financing of terrorist activities.
Due to its inclusion in the gray list, Pakistan faced many hurdles in accessing funds from various countries at the international level and assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Union.
