Near-final results showed that the British Labour Party achieved a landslide victory in the legislative elections held on Thursday, thus ending 14 consecutive years of Conservative rule in their worst electoral result since the beginning of the 20th century, and opening the doors of Downing Street to its leader Keir Starmer.
According to the poll results published by British television channels, the Labour Party (centre-left) will win 410 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, far ahead of the Conservatives, whose share will be limited to 131 seats.
The anti-immigrant Reform Party did better than expected, winning 13 seats, according to the poll.
This result opens the door wide for the Labor Party to form the next government, while it represents a resounding defeat for the Conservatives, whose share of MPs has shrunk from 365 MPs elected 5 years ago to only 131 MPs.
Today, Friday, the new British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, revealed the members of his new government, the day after the overwhelming victory achieved by the Labor Party, putting an end to 14 years of Conservative rule.
David Lammy has been appointed Foreign Minister, while Angela Rayner has taken over as Deputy Prime Minister.
Rachel Reeves took over the finance portfolio, becoming the first woman to hold the position since its creation 800 years ago, while John Healey took over the defence portfolio, while Yvette Cooper was assigned the interior portfolio.
Earlier today, King Charles III formally tasked Labour leader Keir Starmer with forming a new government.
Buckingham Palace published a photo showing the King shaking hands with Starmer, and before that the King accepted the resignation of Rishi Sunak, the outgoing Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party.
After being tasked with forming the new government, the new British Prime Minister pledged to unite and rebuild the United Kingdom, and to bring about the changes that the Labour Party had promised during its election campaign.
In a speech upon his arrival at Downing Street after being formally tasked with forming the government, Starmer said there was a need to address the lack of trust in politics through action.
“The people voted for change and for Labour to return to power,” Starmer added.
Sunak announced his resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party, saying he took full responsibility for the huge election loss.
Sunak, who retained his parliamentary seat in Richmond in northern England, said he had called his rival, Labour leader Keir Starmer, to congratulate him on his party’s election victory.
