On the eve of the general elections to the House of Commons in the UK, the BBC News service published an article by its political observer, renowned journalist Chris Mason, Day.Az reports.
The article, headlined “Chris Mason: We are on the brink of a historic election”, notes that the Tories are preparing for defeat and Labour for victory on July 4.
The election campaign is almost over: over the past few weeks, as experience from previous years shows, almost 20 percent of voters have already been able to vote by mail, the publication notes.
The author recalls that six weeks have passed since the day when Prime Minister Rishi Sunak got drenched in the rain at 10 Downing Street, announcing an early election to the British parliament in July this year.
The main fact to be acknowledged is that “despite all the election hype, the huge gap between Labour and the Tories has barely budged in opinion polls,” the article says. According to the BBC political commentator, after 14 years of rule, the Conservatives are bracing themselves for defeat, and perhaps a catastrophic one.
Polls show that Labour is far ahead of the Tories, who have previously won elections four times in a row, the author emphasizes, recalling that in the modern history of the country, no party has managed to win a general election five times in a row.
“We stand on the brink of what looks like a historic general election,” concludes Chris Mason.
It should be recalled that the results of the elections to the House of Commons of Great Britain will be known already in the evening of the same day. As soon as the polling stations close at 22:00, the results of the exit poll will appear, which invariably accurately predicted the winner every time, as noted in another BBC article.
