London: Britain’s police chief said on Tuesday that violence against women and girls has increased tremendously and the police is dealing with it as a threat of terrorism. According to a new report prepared by the ‘National Police Chiefs Council’ and the ‘College of Policing’, the UK police have registered more than 1 million cases of violent crimes against women and girls between 2022 and 2023, which is a fifth of the total cases registered during this period. One in every six murders during the same period was related to domestic violence. The report estimates that one in 12 women is a victim of crimes such as sexual assault, rape, stalking, harassment or online sexual harassment every year. However, this number may be much higher as many cases of such crime are not reported. Deputy Chief Constable Maggie Blyth said in a statement, ‘Violence against women and girls is a national emergency.’

A serious matter like terrorism

She said: ‘We need to move forward as a society to make a difference and stop accepting violence against women and girls as inevitable.’ Last year, the UK government declared violence against women and girls a national threat to public safety, and police were told they should give the issue the same priority as terrorism and serious organised crime.
