Expectations for a competitive summit finish on the Volta a Portugal gave way to profound grief on Friday afternoon. The 19-year-old British rider, competing for the Swiss-based NSN Development Team, was riding near the rear of the peloton during the 166.8km eighth stage when the fatal collision occurred (Skysports).
The Fatal Collision on Stage 8
The incident unfolded around 3:40 PM on the N306 road between Paredes de Coura and Ponte de Lima in Arcozelo (Newscord). According to reporting from Portuguese national broadcaster RTP, Tarling was struck by a vehicle that was not part of the race convoy and was travelling in the opposite direction on the race course (Cyclingnews). Portuguese police stated that a light goods vehicle was travelling on the road in the opposite direction to the race, and the cyclist collided with it (Newscord).
Emergency responders rushed to the scene. Nine firefighters and five vehicles arrived alongside an emergency medical team, but Tarling suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and could not be revived (Newscord). Peloton Neutralisation and Tributes

Tarling signed a two-year deal with the NSN Development Team ahead of the 2025 season (Newscord).
