Two British citizens were captured in Ukraine by Russian forces and appeared on Russian television today (Monday). The two sought their release in exchange for pro-Russian Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk.
The two – Sean Finer and Aiden Aslin, spoke separately after unidentified people urged them to do so on the broadcast of the Russian TV channel “Russia 24”.
Finer and Aslin asked British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to help them return home and carry out the incitement of the prisoner exchange in question.
Finer, a former British soldier, said he was captured in Mariupol while fighting with Ukrainian Marines. The families of the prisoners said that they were British citizens, not foreign mercenaries, and should therefore be treated as prisoners of war in accordance with the Geneva Convention. Finer’s family said he was referring to Ukraine as “his adoptive country” so he decided to fly to the country and use the combat training he already had.
Aslin, 28, has been defending Mariupol in recent weeks, and a few days ago wrote on Twitter that the forces lacked food and ammunition.
