Just sit down on a colorful lounger and watch the crowds of customers among the stalls at the Green Market. This is also possible at the new Brno gastro garden. But it is more likely that a person will want to have something to eat while resting – a drink or something to eat. A new project by Brno-based businesses offers the possibility to order from four of them.
“The only thing missing is the sea,” says a comfortably seated Brňanka, who has a meeting with a friend in the upper part of the Green Market. Between the Abbot’s Palace of the Žďár monastery and the column of the Holy Trinity, the joint project of the gastronomic establishments Slast, Buchta C, Domovina and Paprika, which are located in a renovated baroque building with the descriptive number 10, is being tested.
“Most people come in the afternoon, after school and after work. But all age groups can be found here. They can sit for just fifteen minutes or even two hours,” says Marek, who works as an operator at the Domovina bistro, which offers food from all corners of the world Asia. One of the main hits of this establishment are the Vietnamese baguettes.
Colorful deckchairs are available in several other places in Brno, but only here is the seating combined with the offer of four local businesses. From one deckchair, people can order (using QR codes placed on the tables) dishes from various world cuisines, selected coffee, cocktails and natural wines.
Coffee in the morning, drink in the afternoon
You can start the day here with coffee and sweet pastries from Buchta C. At lunch time and later in the afternoon, you can have food and drinks from the Domovina and Paprika establishments. In the evening until midnight, cocktails, lemonades and dinners from Slasti, according to last year’s Gourmet Brno survey of the best bar in Brno, come in handy.
“Guests today like to taste, and this concept clearly encourages them to do so. I believe that the shared garden will also be appreciated by larger groups of guests. The more people, the more tastes, and in this case it is all the easier to choose. When the weather is nice, it looks this place in combination with the atmosphere of the Zelné trhu is almost magical,” says Rudolf Forman, operator of the Slast bar.
The new concept represents the democratization of public space and gastronomic experiences and makes the experience of visiting the Green Market, which is considered one of the most beautiful parts of Brno, more pleasant. In fact, it also saves space on the square, because it combines four gardens into one.
Summer living room in Brno
The Green Market project is the second example of a progressive approach to public space in Brno in a short period of time. Recently, an experiment started in Vachova street under the baton of designer Veronika Rút.
Vachova Street was transformed into a “summer living room” – the city closed it to car traffic for half a year and furnished it with furniture and greenery, creating a place for meeting and relaxing.

“I would like to see an intensification of the public discussion about how we use our streets and how we can make our lives more pleasant or easier if we try something different. How exactly, the people themselves will have to tell us at the event,” says Veronika Rút.
Both projects thus show how public space can be innovatively used to create attractive and functional urban zones. The center of Brno can thus pleasantly surprise you during the summer if you know where to visit.
