BOLZANO. The customs station at the river port in the Municipality of Bronzolo will be subject to historical-artistic protection. The proposal of the Councilor for Cultural Heritage, Philipp Achammerwas approved by the provincial council of Bolzano, after years of discussion – especially at a local level – to try to restore lustre to a structure with considerable historical value.

Speaking in detail about the building, we could say that it was built from 1790 to 1795, and for the most part it has remained unchanged. The project was by Francesco Maria Baroni Cavalcabò. It was used as a customs house to replace the older customs building in Piazza S. Leonardo, and served the river transport company as a goods depot and administrative headquarters. Following the decline of river transport in the second half of the 19th century, the building was entirely converted for residential use, a function it still maintains today.

“Most of the historic-artistic protection constraints are carried out in agreement and good collaboration with the owners, because in the end it is an added value for everyone: for the institutions, for the community and for the owners”, Achammer said.

“The customs building, as the only raft port still preserved south of the Alpine ridge, is an asset of supra-regional importance for the history of freight transport and rafting: for this reason it must be preserved and enhanced”, commented the superintendent of cultural heritage, Karin From The Tower.
