It was the divers from the Sûreté du Québec who first found an inanimate body in the river on Tuesday a little before noon.

After identification of the body by the family, the spokesperson for the Service de police de l’Agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL), Mélanie Mercille, confirmed in a short statement “that it is indeed the 52-year-old man. having sunk into yesterday evening, near boulevards Marie-Victorin and Simard, in Brossard ”.

“The autopsy will confirm the cause of death,” she also said, stressing that the results will be known in the coming weeks.

Earlier, Monday evening, the Longueuil police had indicated that the first information gathered seemed to show that “the man was going to look for an object on the water” when he “sank under water”.

Witnesses then told the police that the man, who was on the water’s edge with his 16-year-old son, was trying to retrieve a remote-controlled boat “which had a problem” when it sank in the waters of the river. It is still unclear exactly what caused his drowning.

Recall that officers from the coast guard, the Longueuil agglomeration fire safety service (SSIAL) and the La Prairie firefighters had actively participated in the searches on Monday evening, before they resumed Tuesday morning with the assistance from the Sûreté du Québec.
