Giorgia Meloni’s Italy is on the wrong slope. This is part of the conclusion of the annual report on the rule of law dedicated to this country and to the other twenty-four countries of the EU published on Wednesday July 24 by the Commission. This document covers four key areas – independence of the judiciary, the fight against corruption, media freedom and the balance of powers – and makes recommendations to member states. It must be admitted that Rome’s failures were more than a year ago. Brussels is therefore concerned about obstacles to media freedom, a topic which has repeatedly generated debates in the country.
