Brussels warns of the drift of France’s deficits

DECRYPTION – The European Commission could open budgetary procedures for several countries next year.

The return to normal budgeting is now in sight in Brussels. At the beginning of 2024, the criteria on deficits and debt will apply again, including with the reform of the Stability and Growth Pact recently presented by the Commission.

Valdis Dombrovskis, in any case, set a date with the Member States on Wednesday, on the occasion of the European semester, this spring meeting which provides recommendations to national governments to help them build their budget for the following year.

“Given the uncertainty surrounding the macroeconomic outlook, the Commission does not intend to open new excessive deficit procedures at this stage. However, we will propose to open some in the spring of 2024”stressed the Executive Vice-President of the Commission, calling on national leaders to “keep this in mind”.
