The conflict surrounding Barcelona SC intensified on January 22 when Judge Karly Vargas Alvarado, of the Yaguachi canton, ordered the registration of the board headed by Antonio Álvarez. The controversy did not stop there. On Monday, February 19, Antonio Álvarez, leader of the board in dispute, made public his frustration at the Ministry of Sports’ refusal to register his board. Álvarez warned about the serious consequences that this situation could affect the institution, pointing out possible “institutional damage” for Barcelona SC. Judge Karly Vargas, for her part, transmitted a letter on Tuesday, February 20 in which she urged the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF), the Ministry of Sports, LigaPro and the Guayas Sports Association to register the directory of Barcelona SC. In the document, the Ministry of Sports’ refusal to register Álvarez’s board of directors was questioned, arguing an alleged violation of due process. However, the president of the FEF, Francisco Egas, clarified in an interview with Fútbol Ecuador that the federation has not received a direct order to register Álvarez as president of the club. Egas explained that the letter issued by the judge simply requested information on compliance with the registration order, without implying a direct instruction to the FEF. For its part, the Ministry of Sports defended its decision not to register Álvarez’s board of directors, arguing a “legal impossibility” because the sentence issued by the Yaguachi judge would violate universal law and express regulations.
